Wife wants me to fetch an Elk

To which I replied "huh?"

I know how to shoot without getting myself or others injured but I don't know diddly about hunting.

So I replied, "I'll need to buy a rifle and scope and it could cost nearly 2 grand."

So she said, "Okay."

Apparently she has a thing for very expensive lean meat.

Fortunately I have a co-worker who is into the hunting thing so he's walking me through the license/tag/rules&regs stuff. Bringing along my co-worker's (and his experience) I think I've got maybe a 5% chance of dragging home...something. Without his help I wouldn't drop an elk short of deploying tactical nukes.

Anyways, I did explain to loving wife that the odds were low that I would be successful but that I would give it a go and see what comes of it. I guess if expectations run really high I could make a reservation at some sort of elk preserve where they let the animals graze on a rifle range.

With my luck I'll be reading "How to Butcher Wild Game", with a 500lb dead animal at my feet. Processing poultry is more my speed.

Oh yeah, and its not like we have the freezer space for that much meat. Maybe this is a roundabout way of her getting a meat locker.

As you can tell I'm pretty excited about walking around in the woods early in the morning in the middle of November.

I'll be sure to take pictures. :s1:

Thats a pretty funny story.

Most wives are said to curtail hunting and its cost.

Best Meat I have ever had bar none.. Good luck dropping one. I had a couple friends that hunt them every year. One in NY flys out to Co every year(He is from there originally) uses a 300 mag and does cross canyon shooting.. Anyway, great meat!!!!

I've got to agree. The best tasting, tenderest, juiciest lean meat I ever had as well.

You fly me out there and I'll get you an elk (you'll spend less than the 2k).

Seriously though, best of luck to you. Elk meat is AWESOME! Just look out for the loins on the inside of the carcass..... very poisonous. Wrap tightly, vacuum seal and forward to C. Bassfish for proper disposal! :coolbeer:

Re: Wife wants me to fetch an Elk

A bit of an update.

I thought I'd pick up a DPMS LR-338L for this venture but then discovered that .338 Federal goes for 2 bucks a round. OMFG!

So instead aimed for a DPMS LR-308L. Dealer told me theres a six month wait for these. WTF?

Me thinks there is some clamor for versatile battle rifles.

Okay, so instead lets try something a bit more traditional. How about a Tikka T-3 Varmint in .308 with a Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-14X50mm with Talley medium rings?

They could do that in a week's time.

As rigs go its a bit heavy but it lends itself to other activities if the need arises. Some may consider a .308 a bit light for Elk but I don't plan to take shots beyond 300m given the Coastal range's abundant foliage.

If things go well I hope to zero it at the range on the 13th.

Hell, you can probably just use a 30-06 with some good 220 grain rounds.

if your going quick and dont want to break the bank.....i agree 30-06 would be my choice with either 180s or 220s

Re: Wife wants me to fetch an Elk

Careful you might just become an elkoholic. The roosevelt elk(of NW USA) are much bigger than the rocky mt types, a big bull can yield 600 lbs of meat. Taste great. Caliber all depends on shot placement, in the head a .243 or .270 would work well. Body shot better get .300 caliber or bigger. Heart on an elk is a lot lower placement than a deer. Hunting is a lot of fun. Good Luck!
